Knee pain can be crippling but it certainly(depending on the scenario)shouldn’t stop you from training your lower body. A lot of knee pain comes from patella femoral compression which occurs once our knee travels in front of the toe. A good way to get out of pain can be getting the VMO to turn on. The Spanish squat or split-squat variations allow this to happen earlier in the movement forcing the VMO to contract harder which in turn could take away some discomfort. Use it in an isometric fashion
