The Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a sophisticated fire modeling software developed by NIST, was used to study the dynamics of a 2012 fire in a single-story, single-family residential home in Riverdale Heights, MD. The fire seriously injured two Prince George's County firefighters.

NIST has released videos and data from fire tests on cold-formed steel-framed shear walls, lightweight building materials used extensively in low-rise to mid-rise commercial construction. The shear walls help transfer horizontal forces, such as those that arise from wind or earthquakes, down to the foundation.
