Some deep-sea animals look bigger on camera than they are in real life, since there’s rarely anything familiar in the background to compare them to. That’s not the case here, though! The “big red jelly,” Tiburonia granrojo, can grow to over a meter (three feet) across. Unlike many other jellyfish, big red jellies use fleshy "feeding arms” instead of stinging tentacles to capture food. We found this individual floating 900 meters below the surface during our Seascape Alaska 3 expedition in 2023.
