When done properly and effectively, CPR chest compressions will cause fractured ribs and quite possibly a fractured sternum. There is a small percentage of patients that will not suffer these injuries, but the majority of patients who receive chest compressions are not healthy. Remember, as we age.. our bones are not as pliable or resilient. Decompressing the rib cage up to 2 inches is bound to crack if not completely fracture bones.
