Understanding the Impact of Trauma on Memory

Have you have ever wondered why traumatic memory is so distressing when it’s brought into the present? Part of this involves what is called a prediction error of the brain. When we consolidate memory, we consolidate it in an estate specific form. When the brain is shocked by an an event or events that occurred which went outside normal predictions and past experiences, this memory is encoded with fear and sensory components that get re-activated when brought into the present.
